Robin Sloan, New York Times Best-selling of 2012’s "Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore", will talk about his most recent book, "Sourdough", his inspirations, and his writing. The Raven Book Store will sell copies of his books, and a signing will follow his talk.

About "Sourdough"
Lois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers quickly close up shop. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, they tell her—feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it.

Lois is no baker, but she could use a roommate, even if it is a needy colony of microorganisms. Soon, not only is she eating her own homemade bread, she’s providing loaves to the General Dexterity cafeteria every day. Then the company chef urges her to take her product to the farmer’s market—and a whole new world opens up. (From macmillan.com.)

“I believe it is the first novel in English to feature, as a key supporting character, a possibly-sentient sourdough starter.” -Robin Sloan

About Robin Sloan
Robin Sloan grew up near Detroit and went to school at Michigan State, where he studied economics and co-founded a literary magazine called Oats.

After college, he worked at the intersection of media and technology, first at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida, and then at Current TV and Twitter, both in San Francisco.

His first novel, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, was a New York Times Best Seller, translated into more than twenty languages. George Saunders called the book “a tour-de-force” and Robin kindly requests that no one say anything else about any of his writing, ever.

With his partner Kathryn Tomajan, Robin produces California extra virgin olive oil under the label: Fat Gold. (From robinsloan.com.)
