Lawrence Public Library (LPL) is pleased to announce that legendary R&B and gospel singer Mavis Staples has confirmed her appearance as the 780s Series music storyteller.

Staples will appear at 7 p.m. Wed. Aug. 21, 2019 at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts Street. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the talk will commence at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and no tickets are required.

"Mavis Staples is the living embodiment of the gospel impulse in music. As a member of the Staple Singers and a solo artist, her singing has lifted up so many people over 60-plus years. I am humbled and awestruck at our opportunity to bring such an iconic legend to Lawrence," said Brad Allen, LPL executive director.

Last April, Ms. Staples had to unexpectedly cancel her planned appearance in Lawrence, due to the death of her sister, Yvonne.

"Mavis loves her fans and is grateful to everyone who was planning to attend the event, and she sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this unfortunate cancellation may have caused," read the statement from her management company. "She looks forward to returning to Lawrence in the near future."

Ms. Staples will spend the evening in conversation with Dr. Randal Maurice Jelks, sharing stories from her long and storied career, her unique, frontline passage through the Civil Rights Movement and her own experiences of a tumultuous time in American life where her voice featured prominently on the era's soundtrack.

Love Garden Sounds will sell copies of her latest record, If All I Was Was Black and the Raven Book Store will sell copies of her biography, I'll Take You There. Staples will not be performing music at the 780s Series and will not be signing merchandise.

The event is in the Main Theater with balcony and floor seating. The top tier of the Main Theater floor is wheelchair accessible.
